Free Lesson from Education.com

The more I look at this site the more I like it and find its value. Education.com offers a variety of worksheets, online games, and lesson plans to meet the needs of a variety of content area in grades K-5.  Below is just ONE sample of what you can find here - as well as a lesson plan to get you thinking about possibilities.  The site is SO user friendly, and it is teachers giving teachers ideas, which we all know is crucial since they are in the same shoes we are:)!!  The learning library alone is worth a peak.

Here is a sample lesson plan so you get an idea of what you may find here:

The Influence of Latitude on Music

Objective:

This project compares music from several different countries to determine if there is a correlation between tempo and latitude.
For more fun and engaging learning activities, go to Education.com!

Research Questions:

  • Is there a weak correlation between tempo and latitude?
  • Is there a strong correlation between tempo and latitude?
  • Are there other factors like history or culture that could weigh in?

Materials:

  • Internet access
  • Pen or pencil
  • Lab notebook

Experimental Procedure:

  1. Listen to 20 different national anthems from countries around the world. Click on this link to find a database of national anthems: http://www.nationalanthems.info/.
  2. Find the tempo, also known as the beats per minute (bpm), of each song. Do this by clapping out a beat for ten seconds and multiplying that number by six, or use the free music software listed in the references. Record each anthem's bpm in your notebook.
  3. Use the internet to research the latitude of each country.
  4. Graph each country's anthem's tempo and latitude on a scatter plot.
  5. Analyze your data. Was there a weak correlation? Was there a strong correlation? Were there any surprises?
  6. Could any other factors have affected the results?
Terms/Concepts: tempo, beats per minute (bpm), latitude, scatter plot, correlation

Here's some more information regarding Cyberbullying to check out.  It's QUITE scary to think about all that children have to deal with nowadays!  The instant EVERYTHING - UGH!!  BUT, we as teachers, role models and parents can help and try to stay proactive.  Here is another link by Wiz Case to check out: A Comprehensive Cyberbullying Guide for Parents The more informed we are - the BETTER off we are as a whole.  This is such a tough and unfortunately never ending topic - good luck with this and PLEASE PLEASE share anything you have, anything you know, and keep your eyes out for all kiddos:)!! Happy Monday Mrs. I:)

CodeHS - Great Site for High School Students

We have been looking for something in regards to coding for our senior high school students.  They have been having fun playing with the Sphero and the Dash and Dot , but they are a little old for this so to say.  Through my research, I came across a site called CodeHS .  THIS IS AMAZING:)!!!  Once you sign up, you are taken through a series of courses where you actually code.  You type in the commands and functions, trying to walk Karel, the dog, through various tasks.  Each section features a video explaining what you'll learn, a quiz to review, and then you step in and use what you learned to code Karel.  This seems like a really good fit for some of our kids.  We have two that are going into Computer Science, and this seems like a perfect stepping stone as it introduces HTML , Javascript and Python as they are also areas they will learn:). AND the best part - it's DONE FOR YOU and IT'S FREE!! Of COURSE you can pay for more, but i...

Starfall Website......

I am not sure if I have shared this website with you, but our Kindergarteners are ROCKING IT OUT!  The site is Starfall and it has SO much great content on here.  Below is a list of content for the little ones:    The kiddos today were working on the Learn to Read section.  They had to listen to words, add beginning and ending sounds, and read stories and click and find things as they went.  They were TOTALLY engaged!  They even had a checklist to do once sections were completed to track their progress.    A SUPER fun one for the kiddos is preK-1st grade I would say FOR SURE:)! Bad news - NO iPad as it's flash based:(  - but still PLEASE CHECK IT OUT Happy Monday and night, Mrs. I:)
